Admission & Application Survey |
| Full-time MBA program |
I was far older than the usual full-time applicant, in my late 40s. Some
admissions officers told me flatly that, despite my youthful looks, I
would not be a good fit in classes at their full-time programs, but
nevertheless I applied with a 680 GMAT and got rejected. I consequently
broadened my list of schools, and continued to call admissions officers
for interviews. In my essays I stressed my international background
(from travel and nonprofit work) and the increasing breadth of
responsibilities of my current job so that there would be no question
that I was management material, even if I was older. I ended up being
admitted into the full-time program of a school that also had a part-
time program that attracted many older students; it was a good fit
although not quite the one I had expected. If I were asked about the
business school admissions process by prospective MBA applicants in
their 40's, I would recommend going to a seasoned counselor for hard-
nosed advice before spending money and time on applications to places
where one really has no chance despite high GMAT scores and significant
work experience.
