UVA law school is known as the beer and softball school. Softball, the
unofficial law school sport, is played both fall and spring semester
with three leagues based on the level of competition one desires. First
year students typically rush to a game between classes and arrive at
their next class with their clothes smeared with dirt from sliding into
home or with tales of the pop fly to center field caught for an out.
Charlottesville is also home to a number of bars and restaurants to
cater to everyone. Law students typically have a Wednesday night "Bar
Review" meeting at a different bar to socialize and commisserate over
the stress of torts, contracts, or the blown softball game. Popular
establishments are Sloans, Starr Hill Brewery, The Station, The
Biltmore, and Wild Wings. Many of the bars also have live bands on the
weekends occasionally hosting law school bands which have formed during
the course of the year.
Among the events in Charlottesville are occasional concerts by
Charlottesville native Dave Matthews and the Dave Matthews Band.
Typically this takes place in Scott Stadium, home to the UVA Cavaliers.
UVA has excellent football, baseball, and basketball teams and the ACC
action keeps everyone interested during the spring.
Other social events for law school students come through the variety of
clubs formed by students at the law school. Clubs cover a variety of
areas of legal and personal interests. Among the popular clubs are the
J.B. Moore Society of International Law, the Law Democrats, the Law
Republicans, the Lambda Law Alliance, and the Virginia Society of Law
and Technology. Each of these has its events, club meetings, and
academic symposia which offer opportunities to socialize, network, and
meet other students with similar interests.
