| Full-time law program |
The career opportunities coming out of the University of Virginia School of Law
are phenomenal. Top firms from across the country recruit on campus and students
regularly receive multiple job offers. The most common destinations of graduates
are New York, D.C., Texas, and California. Summer positions are the largest
source of job offers for students and UVA students are highly sought after.
Public service internships are also plentiful and many students clerk for judges
during first summer. Federal district and appellate courts as well as state
Supreme Courts all hire UVA students as clerks after graduation. Government jobs
are also plentiful due to the proximity of Washington, D.C. for agencies to come
to campus to interview.
Career placement resources are adequate, but utilization of those resources is
up to the individual student. Primarily geared to big law firms, the Career
Services office maintains a large roster of firms which come on campus and
students submit their resumes for consideration for interviews on campus online.
After submission of their resume, students are either selected for an interview
or if rejected can get a second shot at it by writing a cover letter expressing
particular interest in a firm. Although somewhat discouraged, students can also
regularly squeeze an interview out of a firm by approaching the interviewers
during a break in their interview schedule.
Career services help outside of the on-campus interviewing leaves something to
be desired, especially if your search leaves the normal path of most UVA
students. Although they will prepare a mailing list of firms in a particular
city for you, there is little alumni networking which is encouraged or taught and
non-traditional students have a more difficult time receiving help or
encouragement in realizing their career goals.
