UVa is very selective and getting in is always difficult. Its
increasing popularlity with students makes it harder to get in all the
time.
If you have grades and LSATs in the right range, though, there are two
things you can do to boost your chances.
First, and easiest, is be sure to go for an interview. UVa is the only
Top 10 school that relies on interviews for part of the process and
interviews do make a difference. In particular, the school is looking
for well-rounded, smart, but not cut-throat students. That is engrained
in the cultuer of the school. So if you do interview, be yourself, and
if yourself is someone who is not agressively competitive and well-
rounded, you boost your chances of getting in.
Second, UVa still has a state school affiliation. Although the
percentage of in-state students continues to drop, and thus in-state
admissions are harder than ever, if you are in the range, being in-state
still gives you an admissions boost and a tuition break. The school is
not picky on being in-state. Afterall, its in its interest to have as
large a pool as possible. You can easily work in DC for a year, live in
the northern Virginia suburbs and count as a resident. Not a bad year
off.
