Quality of Life Survey |
| Full-time law program |
There is graduate housing for single students and married students, but
there tends to be a long waiting list. Graduate housing is a
significant distance from campus, but the campus shuttle or the Santa
Monica bus system provide easy access. UCLA is presently building a new
graduate housing complex on campus, but I am unsure of the completion
date. Most law students live in West L.A., the neighborhoods of
Brentwood or Palms, or Santa Monica.
On-campus dining is fine. The satellite cafeteria immediately next to
the law school is pretty bad, and becomes tiresome after a short time.
However, there is another satellite cafeteria with more diverse and
better quality offerings. The main student union, which has within it
several well-known fast-food chains (Panda Express, Sbarro, Rubio's, for
example) is about a 10 minute walk. Westwood village, on the border of
the campus to the south, also offers diverse cuisine.
The area around the campus is generally quite safe. UCLA is located in
Westwood, basically bordering Brentwood and Bel Air. There have been a
couple of random incidents in the past couple of years, but the school
is safer than any other urban campus that I am aware of.
The law school itself is a great building, very well kept-up and
aesthetically pleasing. There is a courtyard in the center in which
students socialize between classes and eat lunch. There is a student
lounge, but it is quite small. When it rains, which is very infrequent,
students often sit along the walls of the main hallway to enjoy lunch
due to a lack of indoor common area seating. All of the desks in
classrooms are equipped with internet access, which allows for easy
browsing and instant messaging while professors are droning on. The law
library was recently expanded and is without question the nicest library
on campus.
