Davis is an ideal location for your first year: there are very little
distractions, and it is very easy to get around. It is extremely safe
and small-town suburban. The Farmer's Market embodies the quaintness of
the town. Dining is above average, but the San Francisco Bay Area is a
little over an hour's drive away, if one has the resources. Sacramento
is also about a fifteen minute drive away and is not unlike a mid-sized
east coast city. You can find plenty to do if you look hard enough, and
people are less assuming that those in larger cities. Housing is
commensurate, slightly less than the Bay Area, but higher than the
surrounding rural areas of Davis and Sacramento.
