City of Davis housing is outrageously expensive, and getting worse.
Real cost of housing is not reflected in financial aid calculations.
Recent tuition hikes were implemented with no warning in mid-semester,
then again in summer. Don't put it past CA to raise tuition even more
to balance the budget.
Plan to get to Davis and find a place by March or April, or you'll be
stuck and limited in what you can find. Davis landlords have the
advantage and often use it. Get familiar with CA landlord/tenant laws,
you may need to refresh your landlord's memory of them. Pay particular
attention to the amount they can ask for a deposit.
Avoid Acadian Property Management. I had two very bad experiences with
them, and I didn't even rent through them! While they seem to manage a
large portion of the rentals in town, I would live in my car before
going to them again.
UC-Davis campus is very nice. Clean, well-kept, lots of plants and
green space. Law school is on one end of campus, so you really don't
see much of it in everyday life. No cafeteria at the law school, a few
vending machines with the usual nasty food. There is a small campus
food court nearby with Carl's Jr, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and other odds
and ends of food (espresso, crepes, deli sandwiches, sodas, chips, etc.)
Law school has a small, dirty little student lounge, shared with some of
the administration staff. Small high school lockers located two floors
from most of the classrooms. Classrooms are in dire need of updating.
Computers are present, but technology is rarely used in classes. Most
information is still passed along by pushpins and cork bulletin board.
Aggravating when your only class for the day is canceled and you don't
find out until you get to school. Shows where the law students are on
the priorities of the law school. A very few professors use email to
communicate and laptops for some presentation.
Very rare for any two clocks in the building to read the same time.
Often take weeks for clocks to change after Daylight Savings Time
changeover.
City and UC-Davis have an extensive bus system which reaches most
residential areas of the city. Some of the routes can get crowded
during school 'rush hours' especially in bad weather.
City of Davis is bicycle capital of the world. More bikes than cars at
some times it seems. Biking can be quicker route to campus than
driving, plus much of campus is off limits to cars. If you drive, watch
out for bikes ! They're everywhere, and if you don't keep a close eye
out, you'll probably hit one.
City of Davis has lots of good restaurants. It is tough to find them
sometimes, because of restrictive sign ordinances, and some are in
tucked-away places.
City of Davis likes to think they could exist without the University, so
there is always some tension between the two.
Customer service in Davis generally sucks. There are some exceptions,
but most places are overpriced. Davis does not allow most general
merchandise type stores (Target, or, God forbid, a Wal-Mart !!) in town,
so much of that type of shopping is done out of town. Tough if you try
to live without a car.
Air Quality in the area not very good. Summer heat seems to trap in
pollutants and dust from surrounding agricultural activities. Summers
are HOT. Don't even think about living without air conditioning.
Winters are mild, with some rain showers.
Davis is generally a safe city. Many good neighborhoods, really no
slums or scary places.
