| Full-time law program, public policy program |
There are dorms nearby at International House, but for the most part
students find their own housing. There are many good and cheap
restaurants, and almost always something going on.
The law school facilities are absolutely awful. It's a building
designed and built in the late 60s, I believe, with a design that had
to be rotated before construction because of a recalcitrant frat
house. As a result, the building faces Hillel and frat houses across
the street rather than the SF Bay. The classrooms are not stuffy, but
have no windows and inadequate heat when it gets cold.
The policy school facilities are nicer, with a new building constructed
in recent years and a much more collegial feel.
The facilties of U.C. Berkely otherwise are excellent, with lots of
open space for reading and recreation, playing fields, libraries,
excercise facilities, etc. But you have to go out and find them.
For both law and policy students housing is very expensive, but
Berkeley is an easy city to navigate by bike and has many inexpensive
attractions and decent public transport. BART is an easy way to get
into San Francisco for culture not found in Berkeley.
Berkeley is not the safest city in the U.S., but for the most part if
you stay out of West Berkeley and avoid the quieter sections of
downtown at night there shouldn't be a problem.
