Fist year classes are pre-assigned and scheduled. There is rarely any
cold-calling, and not much use of the Socratic method. First year
classes are in Modules of 30 people, with a couple coures consisting of
3 modules together. Even in these larger classes (90 people) the
learning process is very personal because there is more discussion than
lecture most of the time. (Profs sometimes apologizes when he has to
lecture "too much" instead of allowing more time for discussion.)
There are no letter grades here; 60% of class gets "Pass", 30%
gets "honors" and 10% gets "high honors." The workload is manageable
and there is an extreme emphasis on NOT WORKING TOO HARD--from
everyone: professor, deans, other students, etc.
