Social Life Survey
Full-time law program Before I started law school at Alabama, I had rumors about the cuthroat competition at Alabama's law school. I have not seen that during my time at Alabama. Granted law school students are competitive by nature because they know that good grades go a long way to landing you a good job, but not to the degree that they will step on somebody to get those good grades. When I have had to miss class, students have been more then helpful to give me the notes that I miss. I have also helped students with their job search, and others have helped me with mine. The atmosphere is quite collegial, and that bonding that is done during 1L leads to many close relationships. The main social events sponosored by the law school, are the once a semester bowling party, festivities during homecoming week, and festivities during law week. The bowling party is quite fun, a local Bowling alley is rented out to the law school for a late night of bowling. Typically all of the students attend that function, and it is great way to get to know your classmates out of the law school setting. The festitvities during homecoming week consist of a band party, a pool tournament, a flag football tournament, a golf tournament, a homecoming parade, and a dinner cocktail party. Usually students participate in at least of these events, and as you can see there seems to be something for everyone. Homecoming, of course, is in the fall, and in the spring there is Law week. During law week, the festivities are quite similar to those of homcoming, with the week capped off with sort of a law school prom type thing. There is quite a social scene in Tuscaloosa with it being a college town. Bars are quite prevalent in "the strip" area where many law students hang out at night. There are many good drink specials at some of the local bars, [e.g. The Houndstooth consistently has $3 pitchers.] Generally when law students are looking to unwind with the consumption of alcoholic beverages, there is no shortage of places to fulfill that consumption. There is not that much dating between law students. However, that being said a few law school couples do happen but they are kind of a rarity. One reason for the lack of dating, is the law school class median age keeps getting older and older, and with that a fair amount of students come to law school already being married or at least in serious relationshis.
