The U of Akron has changed dramatically in the last few years due to a
large grant from the State of Ohio to refurbish the campus, and its
president, Dr. Louis Poerenza (?), is getting value out of every penny;
the urban landscaping is tremendous, a break from the concrete landscape
it neighbors. Housing south of campus is cheap (safe single rooms can be
had under $200/mo. just south of campus), close and plentiful, but old;
modern apts. are a few miles away but require commute. No on-campus
housing is available for law students. But even the cheapest apts. are
safe unless a student is reckless. Food-- outside of late-nite hangout
Luigi's, the food around campus is pedestrian at best. Panhandlers have
discovered that students walking south to apts. after class are easy
marks, so they are plentiful in warm weather. But w/ a new student
center, several new buildings, superior computer availability, Akron Law
was a great experience and a great value.
