Quality of Life Survey
Full Time Law Program Housing: Your in luck because I am one of the few students who have the luxury to live in the dorms. The school building is being sold and for that reason little to no funds is expended on its up keep. The same can be said for the dorms. They are reasonably priced... my one bedroom cost 6200 for year including winter and summers. However, you will be responsible for your own eletricity, gas and telephone. This can get quite expensive. There is no uniformity in the size or quality of the dorm apartments. You have studios, one bedrooms and two bedrooms. All differents size and prices. Depending on where you are in the building you can have a one bedroom the size of a palace or you can have crammed two bedroom. It is really at the luck of the draw. Most students who don't live int he NY area would kill to live in the dorms because off campus housing is quite expensive. Campus: The campus of Touro is quite small. You have the main building and the dorms... that's it. The main building has about 8 class rooms, cafeteria, faculty and adminstration offices, and our library. Our library takes up the entire Southwest corner of the building. You have reading rooms that contain the statute books for each state... as well as two computer labs and an international room. It serves its purpose and because Westlaw and Lexis are so widely used it does not pose for a problem. There are about 6 private group study rooms... these fill up fast during finals. Again the building is clean but it used to be a middle school so you still have the rows of lockers in the hallway. On scale of one to ten the building is about 3. Neighborhood: It should also be mentioned that we are at the border of the "ghetto" of Huntington and the "village". The village has great restaurants and boutique stores. It also has all the needs that one would need doctor's offices, dentists, grocery store and churches. However to get to the village you must drive through the ghetto. It is quite run down area with a lot of scketchy characters. We have had 3 robberies in the dorms this past year. Thankfully no one has ever come face to face with their assailants but.. this is stuff you should know... during the day safety is not an issue... but at night especially if you are leaving out of the side to go to the dorms you do feel uneasy... again this is all without incident.. but you should be aware in what area Touro is currently in. However... two blocks in any direction you will be in a very nice area... such is New York... Transportation: In additon, the bus system in Suffolk County is very poor. The buses are clean and great by the frequency is low. It is best to come here with a car. However, if you live in any of the five boroughs or western long island you should know that we are exactly 7 minute walk from the train station right down New york avenue so it is very accessible to the Long Island Railroad.
