STCL is a stand alone law school with no housing. The Student Affairs
office does help prospective students with housing issues though. It is
located in the heart of downtown Houston, so there's alot of housing
near it, but those complexes are generally expensive. Better to move
outside of downtown and commute, unless you don't have a car. You
pretty much need a car in Houston though- I lived without one for
several years, but it's very difficult to get around. South Texas' big
issue is that there is a severe lack of parking. There is no parking
garage for STCL. There are a few lots where you can get a discount on
parking, but there aren't many spaces available. So, parking is a huge
factor in your budget while attending STCL. Things got really bad after
Enron Field (now MInute Maid Park) opened. Now, with the Toyota
Basketball Arena opening at the end of this year, things will be worse,
especially since the Arena is only a couple blocks over from STCL. The
campus can be a place just to go to class or can be a home away from
home. There's a small lounge area to meet and eat lunch. There's a
diner-style food counter where you can get sandwiches, burgers and daily
specials for cheap. The vending machines are often barren by the end of
the week, especially when it comes to water- it goes fast. The
neighborhood is mixed. There's a park a couple blocks away where alot
of homeless people hang out. But, crime isn't too bad in that area
considering it's in downtown. It should lessen even more when the
Toyota Arena opens. One thing that's really nice is the school provides
police officers to escort you to your car if you ask. Since the STCL
building also hosts two appellate courts, security is a little better
than other places. It helps too that there's only one entrance to the
school.
