First year- if you do really well- getting a judicial intership with a federal
district judge (or State Supreme Court judge) during the summer is best. You
don't get paid, but some schools give credit for this intership. If you do
really well, you can also try working at a good firm- some (but not all) accept
first year students. For either job- send out a cover letter, resume, transcript
(and writing sample, if asked) as soon as possible after your first semester
grades come out.
2nd year- second year is the meat of the hiring process. Most big firms
participate in OCI (On Campus Interview). What happens is that during the summer,
all interested students submit a resume and bid for empoyers (just check off
which employers they are interested in). THe school's career services then sends
out all of the resumes. The employer picks anywhere from 10-30 students, and then
gives them a 20-minute on campus interview. If you make a good impression- you
would then be invited to a second round of interviews in the office, these are
generally 3 hours. Then, if you again make a good impression- you would be
offered a summer associate position for the following summer. Many first year
associates get their permanent jobs from these summer associate positions.
