Quality of Life Survey |
| Full-time Law Program |
Your quality of life in law school will depend on your goals. Because
NU Law is located right in the middle of the Magnificent Mile, in one
of the most beautiful and exciting location in Chicago (and all of the
Midwest), there is no shortage of fun things to do and see. However,
the work load of law school will make it very difficult for you to
enjoy these things. The Museum of Contemporary Art is literally two
blocks away from the law school, but I did not find the time to go
there until the end of my first year.
Housing at NU Law is all right. Most of the first year lives in Lake
Shore Center, which is a block away from the school, located on Lake
Shore Drive. It is a large, dark, old building with atrocious food and
drafty halls, bad carpets, and a million fliers on the walls. Everyone
I know who lived there first year moved out their second year. It is a
good place to meet other 1Ls (almost all of my friends from first year
lived there), but it can be a depressing place. The building is shared
by NU medical students also.
There is no real campus. We basically have three buildings that are
all internally connected. Most of the other buildings around us are
medical buildings (NU Medical School, and the Northwestern Hospital
buildings). We are very far away from the undergrad campus, so you
don't get the feeling of being in college at all.
Most of the students who do not live in LSC live in buildings within a
one mile radius of the school. Lincoln Park, with all its charming
stores and restaurants and boutiques, is very close. The public
transportation system in the city is terrific, so it's not a problem to
live a few miles from the school.
The campus is pretty safe. As far as I know, nothing has really
happened in the Chicago campus in the past few years. I feel safe
wandering around the campus at all times of the day and night. It is a
pretty ritzy neighborhood so you don't have to worry much, but there
are homeless people who can sleep in the park at night so you should be
cautious.
