This is an elite school that has a growing national reputation. Other than
Wachtell, Covington and I think Gibson Dunn, every firm in the country worth
mentioning comes to our on-campus interviewing season. Especially if you want to
work in Chicago, a NU degree is gold, but even in other cities you can get really
plum jobs (e.g. three or four people in my class are going to Cravath next
summer). With the downturn in the economy the placement rate for 2Ls seems to be
something less than 100% but most people in my class seem to have good offers to
choose from for next summer.
The career center help is what you make of it. The counselors know what they
are talking about if you ask them questions - the advice they've given me has
turned out to be pretty accurate. Some people bitch and moan about the career
center staff but for me they've been very accessible and helpful. My big
complaint with them was during my 1L year - they focused their efforts on
teaching us how to find jobs with firms as 1L's, while at the same time saying
most of us wouldn't find such jobs no matter how hard we tried. If that's true,
then tell us about other options!
The school's location in downtown Chicago makes for wonderful internship
opportunities with judges, prosecutor's/public defenders offices, and all kinds
of public interest placements. Many of these will give you course credit.
