Employment Prospects Survey |
| J.D. (Law School) |
Northwestern has an excellent Office of Career Services, which puts on an
extensive on-campus interviewing program for 2Ls and 3Ls each year. The most
prominent law firms in Chicago, New York, and Washington generally recruit on
campus (as well as Los Angeles, Boston, and other large major U.S. cities).
Northwestern does not allow prospective employers to pick and choose among their
students by seeing their GPAs before they interview candidates. Each student at
Northwestern has an equal opporturnity (through a lottery process) to inteview
with the law firms (and other employers) that recruit on campus. Most students
receive a job offer through the on-campus interviewing program. The career
placement resources are showing signs of strain with the growth of the law
school.
That Northwestern has an extensive on-campus interviewing program is a testament
to its reputation among employers. Northwestern students are no more deserving of
jobs at the top Chicago firms than students at other law schools. The school,
however, enjoys a very high reputation in the Chicago legal community.
Northwestern is also making a significant effort to promote public interest
work. A revamped Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) is helping students
committed to careers in the public service and public interest arena. Eligibility
and benefits are predetermined according to a sliding scale based on salary.
Students working in public interest occupations and earning up to $60,000 per
year are eligible.
