Admission & Application Survey |
| JD/MBA program |
The JD/MBA program underwent significant changes in 2000. The
application is comprised mostly of the Kellogg MBA application, along
with an additional essay on "why a JD/MBA degree?" The admissions
process is a challenging one, compared to law school admissions. While
applicants fill out only one unified application (instead of the
traditional two, one for each school), and are required to take the
GMAT only (and not the LSAT, unlike almost all other JD/MBA programs),
the program admits only 15-20 students per year (although that number
is said to increase by 5 or 10 within the next few years).
Applications for the NU dual-degree has doubled since the program
switched from a 4-year to a 3-year program, so the applicant must stand
out in three ways: (1) outstanding record of significant work
experience (since JD/MBAs are admitted to the business school, the work
experience expectations are high, so you probably won't see many 22-24
year-olds in the program--sorry); (2) superior academic performance
(including GMAT and LSAT, along with a strong GPA); and (3) outstanding
communication skills as evidenced by the applicant interview and the
essays. While law school applications basically require a personal
statement, LSAT score, 1 letter of recommendation, and a transcript,
the JD/MBA process is more attuned to the b-school format: 2+ letters
of rec, transcript, GMAT and LSAT, 6+ letters of recommendation, and
significant work experience.
