NYU is social. Every Thursday night there is either a cocktail party
in the student center or a "bar review" event at a local bar. There is
both a semi-formal and an end-of-finals party each semester. This is
New York City, so there are tons of great restaurants just within
walking distance of the school. Otto has great pizza, Tomoe has
amazing (and cheap) sushi, Grey Dog Coffee has the feel of a ski town
coffee shop and is a popular NYU Law hang out. The bars in the NYU
area should be avoided unless you want to hang out with undergrads, or
more often, high school students. If you venture just one neighborhood
south (SoHo), west (West Village), or east (East Village or NoLiTa),
you will find an abundance of great bars (and restaurants). Every
incoming student should pick up a Zagat's restaurant guide and a
Shecky's bar and nightlife guide. TimeOut New York is also great so
that you can keep up with all the goings on -- new restaurants and
bars, music, art, movies...
