Quality of Life Survey |
| JD Program |
Quality of life is so subjective -- New York is an amazing city and
being here makes up for the fact that apartments are small and
everything is expensive. The students at NYU, for the most part, seem
very happy. If you ask an NYU student if he likes law school, chances
are, he'll say yes. Not true of law students at other schools. NYU is
in one of the best neighborhoods in NYC -- Greenwich Village -- and
there is a lot to do when you're not studying. NYU housing is not the
best and it is not cheap. I would definitely recommend getting here a
month before school starts and finding an apartment. It will be more
spacious and it will help you keep your sanity. Living with non-law
students (if you can convince them to live with you) is a really good
idea. If you don't know anyone in NYC, it's probably a good idea to
live in the dorms if you want to be social. You will get paired with a
random roommate, so it's a lot like freshman year again. You will have
a choice between D'Agastino, Mercer, and the Ocean. Pick Mercer. It's
a little more expensive than D'Ag, but it's so much more tolerable.
The Ocean is nice, but it's really far downtown.
Just this week, the law school opened a beautiful new building which is
connected to the old (but very charming) law school building. The
library could use some work and the internet connections in the
computer labs are awful. We do, however, have wireless internet, and
all first years are now required to have laptops with wireless internet
access.
There aren't any meal plans or dining halls like there were in college,
but there are plenty of places for lunch and coffee all around the
neighborhood. The old building and the new building both have student
lounges that serve coffee, snacks, soups, sandwiches, and salads.
I feel very safe in the NYU area. The Village is such a vibrant and
busy neighborhood -- there will be people around no matter what time
you leave the library.
