NYU is in Greenwich Village. The cost of living is extremely high. The
dormitory for first year students is little better than a slum tenement,
and is uniformly believed to be a poor value for the dollar, even by NYC
standards (but it might be the only housing in Manhattan with no
broker's fee). Upper year housing is better. NYU students are well
advised to look off campus. Good options include the better
neighborhoods of Brooklyn--they are safe, cheaper, and in some cases as
little as twenty minutes from campus. NYU generally takes student
safety very seriously--this is NOT a reason anyone whould opt not to
attend. The new building is very beautiful.
