GW is undergoing serious physical renovation that will hopefully put it
into the upper echelon of the top tier. I've hear told that the only
thing keeping GW from the elite rankings are the square footage per
student ratio. I don't know if its true, but when I showed up in '99 it
was cramped. Their were dot matrix printers in the library (now
replaced). They didn't have graduate student housing to speak of. The
facilities are now much better and I am told they have dorms for grad
students. The GW housing market is really difficult to combat if you
haven't got a lot of money, or parents with a lot of money, to through
down a fat deposit and co-sign on an apartment in the foggy bottom area--
a high end area to say the least. It is rough, so student housing can
go a long way. Many students live outside of the District and Commute
in, also a chore due to the rest of the world that commutes into the
capitol to take care of the day-to-day life of, well, the nation and the
world. GW is not the easiest place to go. In fact, sometimes it
sucks. There is little or no crime problem in the campus area, but if
you are commuting to save housing expenses, you might want to be careful
about moving too far east. Shopping in the campus area is awful. The
Safeway is small and the produce is bad. But if you don't have a car,
there are no other grocery options.
