Employment Prospects Survey |

This year has been REALLY tough in terms of finding summer associateships for
the next summer - in fact, about 50% of all 3rd years are still unemployed and
about 70% of all 2Ls have still not received firm offers for summer
associateships. While it's still early on in the process, it's hard not to get
bitter when our friends at Columbia and NYU Law are receiving offers from top
firms like candy. Yes, it's not fair to compare our school with those two
[numbers 4 and 5 in the country] but we're basically competing in the same New
York market and it's been virtually nil for those who are not on law review.
Because of the current recession - even in New York which is a historically
fertile law firm market in comparison to, say, California -firms are especially
grade sensitive, the top firms have very rigid, and very high GPA cut-offs for
Fordham so that unless you're on law review, you will absolutely NOT get a job
offer for next summer with a top, national law firm. Fordham does have some
community clout where it does still carry respect - BUT the current market is
over-saturated - we're basically competing with Columbia, NYU, Georgetown,
Harvard, Yale and Bostum U for New York jobs so that the GPA cutoff for Fordham
is 1) very strict; and 2) very HIGH i.e., law review. This really isn't
Fordham's fault - their career planning center does make all the efforts it can
-
but in this economy with the number of students law schools are pumping out,
it's
very hard for a Fordham law student to compete.
