Quality of Life Survey |
| Full-time law program |
Ithaca is a very inexpensive place to live; however, most of the
students choose to live in Collegetown, which is a short walk from the
law school. The rents in apartments there are outrageous for the
quality of the housing. It is a very popular location for
undergraduates too. If you are willing to live in Ithaca proper, either
downtown or in one of the residential neighborhoods, you will save a lot
of money. If you are willing to live in a rural area in a surrounding
town, you will save even more money.
Collegetown is the home of dozens of bars and mediocre restaurants.
Despite Ithaca's small size, it is a shopping, dining and cultural
destination for people in the surrounding communities. People from
Syracuse come to Ithaca for cultural events. This raises two points. On
the plus side, Ithaca has many more and higher quality restaurants,
bars, theatres, concerts, etc... than you would expect for a town of a
similar size somewhere else. On the negative side, there is NOTHING
within 100 miles of Ithaca worth visitng, seeing, driving to, or talking
about. New York City is less then a four hour drive away.
Ithaca is surrounded by some lovely country-side. If you enjoy hiking,
camping, cross-country skiing, you will be in heaven. If you enjoy
sunbathing or wearing shorts, you might not be as happy. There are many
vineyards surrounding the town, which make some very good sweet white
wines, some mediocre dry white wines, and some truly terrible red wines.
Ithaca is a very safe area. It has a small town feel to it. There is
no place I wouldn't feel safe walking after night. The only real
burglaries occur over winter break when student housing is empty and
vulnerable.
