Employment Prospects Survey
Full-time law program Career services/pro bono depts constantly sends emails throughout the year regarding job, internship, and pro bono opportunities. At the end of 1L summer, there is an Early Interview Program ("EIP") at the Doubletree Guestsuites Hotel, where students are able to select the firms they wish to interview with for employment during the 2L summer. Grades don't matter in determining whether you get an initial interview with a particular firm. However, if there are more students interested in a particular firm than there are interview slots available, such slots are distributed randomly. Students may also participate in the EIP after their 2L summer, but it is generally more difficult to acquire an offer from a firm at this time. There is also recruiting during the year by various employers (corporate, government, etc.) who interview at the law school. Career Services also offers practice interviews by alumni working at law firms; these are very helpful. The Columbia name also seems extremely helpful in securing an initial interview for pro bono work. Even organizations that don't have any openings seem to be willing to at least spend some time to meet with you to see if there's anything you can do for them(after all, it's free labor).
