The student body is extremely high strung. This is almost certainly a
product of BU's ranking - good bordering on excellent. A lot of people
did not get into the school of their choice so they have something to
prove. Also, the strict curve and obvious benefits of being at the top
of the class add to the competitiveness. Couple all these things with
the east coast arrogance/tendancy to be uptight and it makes for a
pretty intense academic environment. For the most part, people are nice
and genuine here (just really intense and academic), just stay away from
the rotten apples.
The campus is undergoing massive change. BU is in the process of
building a new student gym, new hockey arena, new basketball stadium,
etc. The Law Tower is definitely BUSL's biggest drawback - it's ugly,
the elevator system is inefficient, and the temperature is rarely
comfortable. The class rooms themselves are nice, however, and there
are plugs and wireless internet all over the building. The school is
adressing the facilities issue and they plan on starting the
construction of a brand new state of the art facility within the next
two years.
Since BU is an urban campus, security is somewhat of a concern. The
security concerns do not involve violent crime, with respect to that the
campus is really safe. The security issues here are with petty thefts,
such as notebook computers, wallets, etc. There has been a rash of such
incidents lately, and the admistration has not taken many noticeable
steps to curb these things. The new building's design will probably make
security better once it is complete. Aside from the petty thefts, the
urban location of BU has a lot of benefits. It is about 3 blocks from
Fenway Park and it definitely makes Boston more accessible to BU
students than some of the other law schools that are way out in the
suburbs.
One thing about Boston, housing is EXPENSIVE and there really is no way
around that. Even though the Boston housing market is rough, BU helps
incoming law students get in touch with each other by giving them access
to message boards, realators, etc. Although the school does not have on-
campus living for law students, the neighborhoods surrounding the school
provide a wide range (in quality and price) or living options for
students. Also, Boston's size and public transportation system means
that students do not need the added expense of cars. In Boston, cars
are expensive and a major pain - so spare yourself the trouble unless
you have other concerns such as family near-by, children, spouse, etc.
