There is no Greek system at BC. The law school has a chapter of PAD,
the legal fraternity (co-ed), but it costs to join.
The law school hosts tons of events. There are speakers nearly every
week -- during my years I saw Mr. Korematsu, from the Japanese
internment case, to Ken Starr, to three Holocaust survivors. Each of
the law reviews hosts symposiums during the year that bring together a
number of speakers on diverse topics.
The school also has a Law Students Association (LSA), which plans
social and charitable events. Every few weeks we had a bar review,
which was a night out at a local bar. The LSA also hosts a Halloween
party and a few on-campus barbecues, as well as an annual semi-formal
gala. Students can also take part in an LSA-sponsored charity race and
a number of work days at local schools and Boys and Girls Club-type
places.
Students usually go out on their own on weekends. Boston is a great
city to be near for students, and since BC ID's don't distinguish
between undergrad and grad students, they will get law students into
movies, theater, and other events at student prices!
Many students go out to lunch if they have time or dinner if they're
studying late (an unfortunate reality!). Johnny's and Cabots are
popular local diners, with tons of healthy and vegetarian options and
ice cream. JP Licks is also a good ice cream place. Newton and Boston
are also known for ethnic food. Newton has Coconut Cafe for Thai, Cafe
Sol Azteca for Mexican, Sapporo for Japanese, Sabra for Middle Eastern,
and India Palace for Indian. Boston has everything from Cambodian to
Ethiopian.
Newton has one popular bar, Union Street, a popular place for lunch and
dinner, drinks, and weekend brunch. BC gives out a discount card that,
among other things, gives 15% off food at Union Street.
The social atmosphere is largely friendly. Students certainly get
competitive and more solitary during exams, but I made plenty of good
friends who were all too happy to go out to movies or meals. BC is
also about a 5-hour drive from Montreal, making it a popular long-
weekend destination.
