The city is great for finding charming and affordable housing in
comfortable neighborhoods off campus. The cost of living is reasonable
(especially for the East Coast) and I was able to live comfortably from
my stipend alone. It is not required to own a car to get around, given
the scale of the campus and city. The university provided many ways to
make living more safe including bus services, walking escorts and a
visible security presence. Most people, though, were fairly careful and
considerate of crime, because we were reminded of it through vandalism
(of cars), vandalism of property and muggings.
