New Haven gets a really bad rap, but has become a lot safer in recent
years. That said, during orientation week, my friend's car was broken
into and her stereo was stolen. But as a woman, I felt very
comfortable walking around solo. You learn very quickly which are good
streets to walk on, and which ones are best bypassed. I lived in the
medical center and paid ~$700 for a studio and later $500 for a room in
a two-bedroom apartment. For public health and medical students,
living near the medical center makes for a really quick walk to classes
(my record was 3 minutes from door to lecture hall). The area is also
convenient to the downtown nightlife. A number of people live in
the "Grad Ghetto" which is actually a nice little area full of houses
that have been converted into apartments. Parking can be a nuisance
and be aware - they will ticket and tow for everything in New Haven!
