| Full-time PhD program in Applied Economics |
The program is unique because in the third year the student must be involved in
a professional intership which can be in a govermental office, private company or
research institute. The intership should also be in Applied Econ and related to
the student's area of specialization. Depending on the curcumstances the
intership is a full-time job or a part-time one. This is a big advantage after
the graduation when the student goes to the job market. Most PhD programs in
Economics do not give this opportunity to their students, but this program add
10 months of professional experince in your resume.
The campus recruiting are not for the students of this program. However, the
biggest recruiting event is the AEA meeting in January each year. I found my
current job through this meeting.
Also JOE (job opening for economist) is a very helpful site along with illinois
skills match.
Even though this program is not very wellknown among employers, it has the
advantage of the intership. Most of fresh graduated students go to job market
without any previous professional experince while this program equip students
with 10 months of work and in some cases more than that. In my case, the
intership was extended to two full years.
