| Full-time PhD program in Applied Economics |
The admission process is very competitive. The applicants are mostly
from outside USA with a strong background in Economics. Even though
Master is not a requirement for this PhD program, majority of the
applicants alreay hold a Master in Economics.
As in every PhD program GRE is a required test and I would assume an
applicant with a score of above 2100 will be a very strong candidate.
Also the essay is a key to addmission. They mostly look for any previous
professional experience in academia or non-academia. That also
determines your ability to participate in department teaching and
research which will be added to your resume along with the degree.
There is no interview process, however, I encourage you to call the
director of the program and show the interest during the process of your
application. That helped me particularly. One phone call to the director
of the program changed my life. They were hesitating to give me a
position as a teaching assistant in the department due to my low score
in GRE/Verbal. From the phone conversation the director realized that I
spoke fluently English and then he granted me the financial support.
Having a strong background in mathematics (particularly in probability
and statistics) is important because the Program uses heavily the
mathematical concepts.
