| Part-time graduate |
While I was in graduate school, I was able to hold two positions and several
internships. One of the positions was a research assistantship that allowed me
to run independently a departmental library for four years. This was a wonderful
experience. I also worked in the state archives as an hourly employee. However,
as time progressed I was able to increase my responsibilities and learn much more
about the running of an archives and the responsibilities that this activity
entailled. Concurrently, I was able to land several internships both at the
state archives and also at the main university library to enhance my training.
Finally, at the end of my studies, I was accepted into a five-month NEH-funded
preservation/conservation training internship at the Sterling Library, Yale
University to train preservation administrators for work in academic and research
libraries. This internship led directly, albeit several years later, to my
current position as Preservation Specialist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
where I am in charge of the preservation program for libraries and archives in
the state.
