I considered other schools including those with better reputations and
interviewed students to find out what to expect. The typical student feels
indentured to the profs and the program. Most programs aren't cooperative.
There's an emphasis on hierarchy. There's an expectation that you'll "pay your
dues."
Students like being at USF. We work together both inside of class and outside.
We work on research for publication together, often without professor oversight.
We know each other well. We want to succeed together. Study groups emerge
for most classes so if you fall behind, others suffer. It's a great motivation
for
keeping up. You also get the benefit of others' analysis to help your own study
efforts.
Students tend to get to know each others' spouses/partners/families. There's no
shame in that "Don't Promote Me" wall of famly photos you might have kept in
your former corporate life.
There are places to eat on campus plus lots of lunch spots within minutes of
campus.
There are occasionally free tickets to movie premiers. If you're into campus
activities, there are lots of free things to do on campus in the evenings, but
Ph.D.
students tend to clear out after hours. Assuming your on assistantship, the
students you teach will be attending those.
