The University of London has a very strong student union, with a pub,
lots of student discounts and services, credit union, etc etc. Student
pubs, while usually being a bit grotty, offer cheap beer and sometimes
cheap food too. And it seems like all students smoke - the concept
of "non-smoking" areas is still foreign.
The SOAS student union doesn't really offer much in addition, other than
Marxist politics and a pub where you can buy some decent weed (but is
closed between the hours of 3pm - 6pm). They do offer some amusement
during election time, with grand promises for sweeping social change if
elected Secretary of Minority Women's Affairs.
SOAS's location makes it ideal for restaurants, events, pubs,
nightclubs, etc, in London - right on the tube system, easy to get
anywhere. Prices in London may make taking advantage of the social life
a bit difficult, but so will trying to keep up with the reading.
A major source of student entertainment is politics. Students in the UK
are very politically active, and SOAS was no exception. The year after I
left, the library was invaded for about a month by the SOAS student
union to protest fee increases and other national political issues.
Their motto, by the way, is "By Any Means Necessary". Baiting the
Marxists is a great source of low cost amusement, especially over a few
pints in the pub.
There are many clubs you can join - both SOAS specific ones and ones at
the University of London. There aren't many social activities organized
by the clubs or unions - more fundraisers and rallys. That said, we did
a lot of hanging out in the pub with our classmates and often profs
would turn up as well - then you would hear the real stories of what
they got up to when performing their field studies in Bali.
