While the greatest asset of the school is its diversity and ability to allow the
student to study in-depth the pervasive nature of international relations, that
exact flexibility can lead to difficulty in describing the degree to future
employers. People want to easily qualify and categorize things, and the Fletcher
degree is extremely multifaceted. It is a degree in international relations, but
the skill necessary to cope in this international world are multifaceted as well.
Think about it, foreign affairs is necessary not only for government relations;
but today, businesses are entering foreign markets before governments.
Furthermore, a legal grounding is necessary to understand these cross-cultural
interfaces, be it governmental, business or cultural. Therefore, sometimes the
nature of the field of study makes it difficult for employers, who strictly see
the world as MBA or law degree. Otherwise, the career services offices is
working hard to meet the needs of students' interests in all fields, but the
multifaceted nature of the field is hard to comprehend or quantify.
