I commented on the social life in the previous question, but I will
elaborate here. Basically the area is divided up into two separate
downtowns. Lafayette, is on the east side of the Wabash river has a
downtown. There are several world class restaurants in this area.
There are also probably about 6 bars most of which are the dive bar /
irish pub type. One of these bars, the Knickerbocker, is the oldest bar
in Indiana (1817 if I recall) and it has live bands including jazz
several nights a week. I think there is also a gay bar called the
sportsman if that is your thing. On the west side of the campus are
where the majority of the students hang out. There are at least 3 dance
clubs and several more irish pub / dive bars. One essential one is
Harry's Chocolate Shop, which is actually a bar. If you go to campus,
just ask someone where Harry's is and they will point you to it.
Harry's is a Purdue Tradition. If you are not into the bar scene or are
looking for something else, there are cultural events like plays,
musicals, and traveling shows almost weekly at the elliot music hall and
in the stewart center. There is also a bowling alley and a movie
theater in the stewart center. The stewart center movie theater focuses
more on indie films whereas the local megaplex (walking distance from
campus) has all of the more mainstream films.
The school has an extensive greek system, but I did not participate in
that.
The big problem in west lafayette is shopping. There is a mall, which
only has clothes for 12 year old girls. There are also several stores
on campus that sell vintage clothes and hand made items, but it is
difficlut to find clothes not from(or anyone on campus not wearing)
ambercrombie and fitch. The good news is that Chicago, only 2 hours
away, has some of the best shopping in the world.
