West Lafaytte Indiana is a somewhat cosmopolitan town. The Lafayette
area, of which West Lafayette is a part, is very industrialized and has
several Japaneese auto plants. It has one of the best Japaneese
restaurants in the country (Kokoro on 6th and Main). I have eaten
japaneese food in New York, Chicago and San Francisco and it doesn't
compare. Hard to believe but you have to try it. The campus facilities
are very up to date. Every building has a public computer lab which run
to about 80 perent capacity during heavy test and project times. The
computers generally are updated every 2 years so they should be running
the latest operating systems and have the latest hardware available for
most of the time that you are there. There is little to no crime in
West Lafayette. I don't think I ever locked the door in the house that
I lived in while I was there. There are also buses that run most of the
day and a 24 hour loop with limited service (the "drunk loop") as it is
affectionately called can give you ride home from the bars at any time.
The bars themselves are below average for a college campus, especially
for a big 10 campus. There are plenty of restaurants and other cultural
events like plays and musicals on campus. And someone is always
throwing a party.
