I chose Purdue because of its reputation, faculty, good resources to support my
program AND estimation that I would be a competitive student. After the Masters
I stayed there for my doctoral study because the resources for my specialization
were deep and I could form a dissertaion committe with the great faculty I wanted
on my team. Mentroship with faculty is invaluable for career planning and
networking opportunities for employment after graduation.
In Clinical and Counseling Psychology, therapeutic practica opportunities are
critical to become a practitioner and Purdue had many. It was a program geared
to train practitioners as well as researchers. There were other schools more
interested in training researchers and professors much more than practitioners. I
learned directly from some very well known therapists and that has made a life
long career difference for success in being a practitioner- the art as well as
the science.
A formal intership is required in APA approved programs at APA approved sites
and those can be highly competitive to obtain. I was able to gain a seat in one
of the top intership settings in the country due to outstanding training and
support from faculty. Other "internship" or experiential opportunities were
available during the program in different clinical settings.
The reputation of Purdue and of my internship site got people's attention when I
applied for my first professional postion. That hasn't changed, but now it is
the accomplishments I have accumulated and the references from my managers that
clearly matter most.
