Like all first ranked graduate programs in Psychology, Purdue is very
selective. The GRE scores and Undergraduate GPA are the primary first
round screening tool. Applicant recommendations from undergraduate
faculty become very important at the second cut along with the answers
to a long, thorough set of essay questions on motivation for pursuing
the degree, career goals, why Purdue, etc.
At that time an interview was not required, but I undertook to visit
the campus, tour the facilities and meet with both faculty and students
enrolled in the program. This is an important step for all of a
person's top choices to attend as even if not required you have an
opportunity to make a favorable impression and determine whether you
might be a good fit in the program and it with you. Find the money to
visit the programs at the top of your list, it could save you much
money and time by not making a mistake.
Attend the best program you can gain admission to AND in which you are
confident you can be a strong performer as a student. Top students
always get better treatment and oportunities than the middle of the
pack. Univerisities are not different than corporations or governments
in this matter and it's true regardless of your academic area of study-
law, business, medicine, psychology or anything else.
