Admission & Application Survey
Part-time MLS progam The first requirement was to take the GRE examination. I choose Pratt simply because they were one of the remaining library schools in NY. They did not make much effort to advertise their presence - I found out about them by doing research online and in print resources for Masters in Library Science (MLS) programs. I contacted the school after I took the GREs and told them I was interested in applying and they sent me an application right away. It was a standard application which was accompanied by 3 letters of recommendation and a statement on why you were interested in the library profession. I understand that they now have an online application on their website. The application was accompanied by a fee which was $30 at the time (1993) so that may have gone up. I received a phone call that I was to come in for an interview with the Assistant Dean. It was interesting in that I was asked a few questions of my interest in librarianship and if I worked or would be working in a library while I was getting my MLS (this is STRONGLY encouraged by the school and I wholeheartedly recommend it - the best training I had was on the job. The program provided the proper framework that allowed me to learn while working). The rest of the interview was about picking the classes I would take. From the tone of her questioning I actually asked if I had been accepted and she said yes as I if I should have known! That interview was how I found out I was accepted - I don't think I received a formal letter of acceptance until after I started! The interview was very informative however, and the Asst Dean offered a great deal of advice on courses and career paths. After that, the process was similar to undergraduate registration - usual lines at Bursar. The school at the time was not extremely selective since there weren't too many people applying at the time. They now have higher standards as they get more applicants but if someone has decent grades (3 GPA?) or SATs (900+?), some library experience and good recommendations (a recommendation from another librarian goes a long way!) they will probably get in. They do offer tuition breaks if you have a 3.5+ GPA or 1200+ GRE.
