Athens is very much a bar town. Court Street is the main social event on
weekends. The Athens Halloween party is
legendary, probably being one of the largest in the country.
Beyond bars, activities are lacking in Athens. The Ping Recreation Center on the
campus does provide more recreation
activities for students, though with a mandatory recreation fee. The Greek
system is relatively strong, though a few fraternities
have lost their charters in recent years. Fraternities and sororities have
private residences intermingled with campus housing,
so have a highly visible presence, and many are large in numbers.
Student favorites in terms of restaurants include the Burrito Buggy and the
Front Room (a campus coffee house-cheap but
good coffee) and - for the more earthy types - Casa Nuevo, a worker-owned
restaurant that serves something I'd describe
as Midwest organic Mexican cuisine. Bars all seemed to have their own clientele,
with some being popular with fraternities,
others being popular with graduate students, some with international students,
and others being popular with non-Greeks.
