| Full-time graduate program |
The program faces a challenge of being at a university that is not national in
its reputation. This tends to diminish job prospects somewhat despite the fact
that the faculty within my academic program (US history) had well-established
scholarly reputations. Nonetheless, a fair number of the Ph.D. graduates have
landed full-time, tenure track positions, though typically at lesser known
institutions.
The program and the university were not well equipped to help Ph.D. humanities
students find jobs outside academia. The career services office is heavily geared
toward undergraduates and did not know how to encourage graduate students to
market their distinctive skills; nor did they attract many recruiters interested
in graduate students, even though the graduate enrollment at the university was
substantial. Because Ohio University is a regional university, its reputation
does not seem to open many doors outside Ohio, from what I can tell to date, In
addition, its alumni tend to live in Ohio or very close proximity, which limits
the potential of alumni career networking in other locations.
