The 12-month program goes by very quickly, but students get to know each
other fairly well. Most people live off-campus, half in Evanston, half
in Chicago. Either way you choose, you have to do a lot of commuting
since the program is divided between Evanston and Chicago. Magazine and
New Media students are probably better off in Evanston. Chicago rents
are much cheaper than NYC, DC, Boston, San Francisco, etc. so it is
possible to live well. Medill, despite its efforts isn't very diverse,
but the city of Chicago is, which is good for your reporting experience.
There's a great gym at NU, though you'll really have to make time to go.
The lake is gorgeous, but for half your time at Medill, it will be
freezing. Medill gives free subway passes, but it helps to have a car,
especially in winter.
Northwestern's health and counseling services are pretty comprehensive,
and you'll probably take advantage during the exhausting year at Medill.
