NYU is in New York City. It doesn't have a campus. Most of the buildings
are clustered in the Greenwich Village area, well-known for its bohemian
environment.
I am not sure if this is done anymore, but the school used to offer low-
cost housing near NYU for people who were not close to the city, even
continuing ed students. I know of at least one person who kept his
apartment long after he had finished taking courses there! I didn't find
out about this till it was too late.
IT courses are usually held at the Cooper Square or Washington Place
facilities which are always heavily trafficked by students at all hours.
So safety is not an issue. There are also plenty of typical college bars
and diners/restaurants in the area, close subways and buses.
