Attending sporting activities was a major part of my social life during
grad school. Fall football games in Cyclone Stadium and winter
basketball games in Hilton Coliseum bring back the best memories of
camaraderie with classmates and other friends in Ames.
Tuesday nights at Cy's Roost with several pitchers of beer and the
odd "kamikaze" was a good break from studies. Our design studio also
got into lots of card playing. Countless hours of cribbage, poker and
pitch to break up the routine of school provided the necessary escape.
Occasionally, a group of us would go to lunch with the professor who
taught technologies. One of our favourite places was Wallaby's. The
Memorial Union also had a pub that featured live jazz, folk and rock
bands on various occasions. This place would be packed for almost any
concert. In the spring each year, a campus-wide celebration, VEISHEA,
would provide many activities and attracted several visitors to campus.
This huge spring event allowed all of the colleges to showcase their
specialties. The College of Human and Consumer Sciences always provided
cherry pies for sale. There would also be a major concert by a popular
group at Hilton Coliseum.
The number of clubs and organizations at Iowa State could accommodate
most every interest that one could think of. The range of clubs could
go from sailing to woodcrafting to poetry and everything in between.
