I had the good fortune of having my brother and his family in town and
they offered me a furnished room in the basement of their home. I could
come and go as I pleased and joined them for supper very often before
returning to campus to study or design in the evenings.
The Iowa State campus has a large open central area and with the strong
Horticulture and Landscape Architecture programs, there are many
different types of trees and other plant materials, usually planted with
a well thought out plan. It was a very pleasing environment at any time
of the year. Crime and personal safety issues were not a concern at
all. Campus security made regular rounds and had a subtle, non-
overbearing presence. Most of the major paths to and from classes and
housing were well lit and tips for proactive personal safety were made
available to the student body.
