| Masters and Phd in Economics/Agriculture Economics |
If you are looking for an academic position in a top university you are unlikely
to get a top 50 or 60 position with a degree from Iowa State. If you want to
change schools, I have found that students even with good grades haven't been
able to get into top 20-30 PhD programs after the first year. They have however
managed to go to schools for PhD in other related fields-statistics or
finance/accounting.
After completing the degree most students find a teaching position in a
reasonably good liberal arts college or a community college.
In the past several students pursued a second major in Statistics which helped
them find jobs in bank and credit card companies and other market research
companies. Pursuing a Statistics Major is not encouragd anymore and does not
count for credits in the Economics program.
Students specializing in Agricultural Economics find post-doc positions in the
associated centers and are also well suited to finding good academic jobs
because of the well respected Agricultural department.
By and large the location is a huge disadvantage when it comes to finding job
and career opportunities and this affects students with a Masters more than
students with a PhD.
There is hardly any campus recruiting for Masters and PhD in Economics although
alumni might sometimes write to the department when they are interested in hiring
people with their own background. The career services are largely geared to
undergrads and do not help with a Masters or PhD. The program in Statistics will
well regarded and a combination of economics and statistics has found students
attactive placements in the industry in healthcare research, marketing research
and in the credit card industry. An occasional Masters student has found
placements with the Kansas City Fed, Sparksco, Wisconsin Public Power. PhD
Research Institute, Chicago and Kansas City Feds .
