Because of the location of the school -- 3 hours drive to any major city -- it
was extremely difficult to find an internship and/or career in IT. Some of my
friends got lucky during the last couple years and landed a job at HSU, but IT
jobs outside of the university were a joke. Only a couple companies actually
hired dedicated IT staff, and there was so much competition for these positions
that the pay was horrible. The career center made a semi-decent effort of helping
me find a job locally, but when it came down to it, I had to move somewhere else
after I graduated or else make $12/hr. as a desktop support tech. Most employers
in IT these days don't really take in to account 'which' university you came
from, so I don't think the name mattered. All-in-all, to find a local career was
extremely word-of-mouth and on the buddy system. Unfortunately, I didn't know
anyone in high places.
