I went to work in Texas after grad school, and boy was I surprised to learn the
Harvard degree was actually a huge deficit. Texans don't like uppity Yankees,
that's for sure.
But you won't have that problem elsewhere. There are unfortunately a few
stick-in-butts who lord their degree from the Big H about, and they poison the
land for the rest of us who must compensate with acts of humility and piety. So
if you get in and graduate, don't be a dick, please.
During the job interview, whatever you do, please, *do not* talk too much about
life Harvard. During job prospecting, when someone asks where you got your
degree, say, "Boston." If they press, say "Cambridge". But don't act like a
stupid secret agent, spit it out if they are really curious, and tell them what
it was like. Or you can use my reply: "I'm in heating and air-conditioning.
Have you considered investing in a new HEPA air filter?"
Now that I'm in Seattle, where folks aren't so uptight, the degree really is a
ticket-- but far more so becasue of what you learned while you there, not the
name on the degree.
