Duke is gorgeous but Durham has its problems with crime and safety.
HOWEVER the problems are not serious enough to avoid Duke. There are
plenty of places to live that are safe and on-campus security is
fantastic. Durham is a quiet place with little to do. For me this was
PERFECT since I spent every waking moment working on my program
(believe me, you will NEED a lot of quality, quiet time to do this
program - the old adage applies "You'll only get out of it what you put
into it").
